Type of project
Aim of the project:
PMTCT Option B+ enables all pregnant women found positive for HIV, irrespective of their clinical status to start lifelong cART. This method has been introduced in a couple of countries in SSA yet, but there is few data about the actual feasibility and effectivity in a real-life scenario. In a cohort of 120 pregnant and HIV-positive women of two hospitals in Fort Portal, Uganda, the implementation of option B+ is tracked. The mother and child couples are followed up during pregnancy and 18 months postpartal with regular sample collection and data documentation. Main objectives are: •How feasible is Option B+ concerning motherly longtime adherence? •Whicht effect does Option B+ have on birth outcomes? •Which HIV transmission rate can be found in option B+ exponed babies after end of breastfeeding at 12 or 18 months? •Does option B+ prevent resistence or are there nonetheless minority mutant populations of HIV in the mothers and children and how is the time course? • Do mutant populations exist before starting option B+ and how do they affect the mother to child transmission?
